What to do if Someone Dies

When someone close to you dies you not only have to cope with your own and your family’s distress but there are also numerous things which need to be done. If you contact the Solicitor as soon as you can they can often help you, not only with any legal points but also with some of the practical arrangements.

This is a short guide to some of the information the solicitor will need to be able to help you. It is not an exhaustive list and your Solicitor will tell you what other information is needed when you see him or her

  • Full Name & Address of Deceased
  • Date of Death & Date of Birth
  • National Insurance Number
  • If they are or were married?
  • Are there any children?
  • Is there a Will and if so what is the date and who are the Executors?
  • Where the Will is if it is not held by NLH
  • Who are the Funeral Directors
If you want NLH to act in connection with the administration, if you wish, we can help by arranging the funeral, attending at the property to look for papers and make all of the necessary arrangements to deal with the estate.

If you do not wish us to carry out the searches for the deceased’s papers you will need to look for and bring into the office:-

  • Original Will (if we do not hold it)
  • Bank Statements, books, paying in books, cards etc
